چکیده

The Elephant in the Corner: A Cautionary Tale about Measurement Error in Treatment Effects Models Researchers in economics and other disciplines are often interested in the causal effect of a binary treatment on outcomes. Econometric methods used to estimate such effects are divided into one of two strands depending on whether they require the conditional independence assumption (i.e., independence of potential outcomes and treatment assignment conditional on a set of observable covariates). When this assumption holds, researchers now have a wide array of estimation techniques from which to choose. However, very little is known about their performance – both in absolute and relative terms – when measurement error is present. In this study, the performance of several estimators that require the conditional independence assumption, as well as some that do not, are evaluated in a Monte Carlo study. In all cases, the data-generating process is such that conditional independence holds with the ‘real’ data. However, measurement error is then introduced. Specifically, three types of measurement error are considered: (i) errors in treatment assignment, (ii) errors in the outcome, and (iii) errors in the vector of covariates. Recommendations for researchers are provided. JEL Classification: C21, C52

Influence Measures in Ridge Linear Measurement Error Models

Usually the existence of influential observations is complicated by the presence of collinearity in linear measurement error models. However no method of influence measure available for the possible effect's that collinearity can have on the influence of an observation in such models. In this paper, a new type of ridge estimator based corrected likelihood function (REC) for linear measurement e...

Iatrogenic Specification Error: A Cautionary Tale of Cleaning Data

Iatrogenic Specification Error: A Cautionary Tale of Cleaning Data In empirical research it is common practice to use sensible rules of thumb for cleaning data. Measurement error is often the justification for removing (trimming) or recoding (winsorizing) observations whose values lie outside a specified range. We consider a general measurement error process that nests many plausible models. An...

Stochastic Restricted Two-Parameter Estimator in Linear Mixed Measurement Error Models

In this study, the stochastic restricted and unrestricted two-parameter estimators of fixed and random effects are investigated in the linear mixed measurement error models. For this purpose, the asymptotic properties and then the comparisons under the criterion of mean squared error matrix (MSEM) are derived. Furthermore, the proposed methods are used for estimating the biasing parameters. Fin...

TESTING FOR AUTOCORRELATION IN UNEQUALLY REPLICATED FUNCTIONAL MEASUREMENT ERROR MODELS

In the ordinary linear models, regressing the residuals against lagged values has been suggested as an approach to test the hypothesis of zero autocorrelation among residuals. In this paper we extend these results to the both equally and unequally replicated functionally measurement error models. We consider the equally and unequally replicated cases separately, because in the first case the re...

Error Analysis, Design and Modeling of an Improved Heterodyne Nano-Displacement Interferometer

A new heterodyne nano-displacement with error reduction is presented. The main errors affecting the displacement accuracy of the nano-displacement measurement system including intermodulation distortion error, cross-talk error, cross-polarization error and phase detection error are calculated. In the designed system, a He-Ne laser having three-longitudinal-mode is considered as the stabiliz...
